Before there is software, there is something worth noticing.
Good software starts with noticing; the code comes after.
Before a technology is chosen, the work that gives software direction should already be underway.
The notebook pairs what we notice in the field (how work flows, where it stalls, and what people
quietly work around) with the software design those observations help shape. Observation becomes
insight, then a shared vision grounded in actual business needs. That vision takes form through
workflows, rules, data, architecture, and integrations aimed at better operational outcomes.
Those outcomes become new evidence: we measure, learn, refine, and return to the field. The
hand-drawn, work-in-progress character is intentional: building the right software is not a
straight line, but a practiced cycle of observation, translation, and improvement.
Field Notes
Your hardest software problem was solved a century ago: just not in software.
Field Notes follows hard-won ideas from outside software back into how custom systems actually get built, and why the best solutions begin in the field.
